Chronic underemployment slowly killing economy – PM

Imagine applying for over 100 jobs, making it through to the final round of interviews in a third of those applications, and having nothing to show for it.

PM speaks to one such a person; he’s one of the 1.8 million Australians who are either unemployed or underemployed in the workforce — together they are people the Australian Bureau of Statistics calls “underutilised”.

Economists say the underutilisation rate is now a “chronic problem” for Australia, and is doing on-going damage to the economy and our overall standard of living.

So what’s preventing many highly qualified Australians from landing the job they desire?
