Australia’s economy ‘can’t take much more’ of drastic social restrictions

The Institute of Public Affairs’ Gideon Rozner says given the lower rate of daily infections of COVID-19, hopefully the prime minister’s announcement on Sunday is “the last ramping up of restrictions that we see”.

Mr Rozner said the “rapidly changing nature” of the restrictions put in place by the National Cabinet “is starting to get a little bit excessive”.

The announcement on Sunday saw gatherings in public places restricted to only two people in drastic new Stage Three limitations designed to “save lives and save livelihoods” in the face of COVID-19.

Mr Rozner told Sky News host Gemma Tognini the new restrictions should be “the last set of drastic measures” announced because “the economy (can’t) take much more of it”.
